Welcome to Part Time Nappy Free!

As I created this simple environmental initiative, I'd be silly not to donate a couple of green promise nappies myself, LOL.

I am proud to have donated Green Promise Nappy #5 to this simple environmental initiative!

Have you registered yet? It's easy to make sure your name is on the official entrants list, and then you can enter for each specific nappy you'd like to have a chance at winning!

Part Time Nappy Free is a site that grew from Tribal Baby, as a way to encourage parents interested in Baby Pottying to give it a go, with the support of lots of ideas and in particular my '7 Secrets to developing Your Nappy-Free Confidence', which is the central and most popular resource of this site.

You've probably heard the rubbish (if you've even heard about the concept at all) that EC means you can't use nappies at all to be doing EC 'right'. This is, of course, drivel, and sensationalism. The reality is that we all use nappies as an integral part of our learning, until they become a hindrance, and then no longer necessary in some situations, then all situations!

Baby Pottying is a bonus - less nappies to wash or buy...

Imagine your baby wakes up from a nap and wriggles, squirms, makes little noises. Just like us, babies often go shortly after waking. So, take their nappy off and hold them over a potty, or sit them on a warm potty! If they go, cheer them on with smiles and then pop them in their nappy.

This is a start! Think of EC as a bonus - pottying your baby means that cloth nappy will last a while longer (meaning less overall) and if you catch a poo - wooHOO - yay indeed!

You see, lots of folks who potty their babies realise the wee signals are pretty darn subtle, so they don't really focus on that apart from regular 'timing ops' such as on waking, transitions from activities and when baby wearing. However, they can 'catch poops' - yes, poo catchers are among us - perhaps you know a few of them, or will if you start asking around. Lots of kids are quite regular, and as they go once a day or so, it is fun to introduce the potty at a young age for this.

Skipping messy nappy changes is FANTASTIC!

We as a family use modern cloth training pants and also night time cloth nappies in preference to disposables, but believe me, I have used disposables too! We had a nappy service with my son Maven five years ago, for the first four months, then switched mainly to cloth training pants when we wanted him in something absorbent!

Even now with Jett, who is one, we use eco-disposables some nights, alternated with specialised night nappies as I slowly purchase a full load for nights. I have a Sandman, a semi-custom made by Michelle at Sustainable Hemp Products  (Fabulous, used with a wool cover), a Good Night Sleep Tight and my latest buy was a Krap Katchers night-time pocket nappy, which I must say is AWESOME! I got it during the re-launch of Nicole's site as a custom made order.

Let's get started:

I'll be asking you a question in a moment. This story will set the scene. When Maven was about 6 months old I got the hang of using a few different styles of baby carriers.

Baby wearing is a great way to help you turn on your 'baby radar' and be more aware of when your baby may need to do a wee. I remember wearing him nakey bum in the sling to the shops, when I felt a warmth on my hip! "Dang!" I thought.. "I've missed a wee!" I headed for the nearest parent room to put him in some pants and see if he needed to finish.

He was dry and so was I! On offering, he did a huge wee! I had experienced the 'Chi Pee' or the "Psychic Wee' as it is variously called. I expect it is that THEY notice their need and blood flows to their bladder area so they hold on - but who knows, perhaps it is a psychic mother-infant bond thing (I enjoy thinking so)

Anyway, babywearing is a great way to begin 'tuning in' to baby's signs. They can be wearing a nappy of course! What happens is they'll often strain at the carrier, or squeeze their legs, or simply wake up from a nap - a perfect time to pop them out for a wee break.

My question is 'What style of baby sling do I use which enables me to hold baby snugly against my hip?'

It'll be easy to find the answer by looking up at the menu on the right hand side up there!
